No Go To Limbo
See the AP story at AOL, and especially note the reaction of Dick McBrien (the one at Notre Dame):
"If there's no limbo and we're not going to revert to St. Augustine's teaching that unbaptized infants go to hell, we're left with only one option, namely, that everyone is born in the state of grace…baptism does not exist to wipe away the "stain" of original sin, but to initiate one into the Church.”
Well, yea. Doesn’t he realize that the church was one of the original social network groups?
Aside from that excommunicable missive, to think that babies are born into original sin has always bugged me. By ordaining so, the church establishes their reason for being at the earliest a priori.
All in all it is a good reason to ignore the whole scene.

It ought to be noted that the media, as usual, got this one wrong. This theological commission has no magisterial authority and the Pope simply accepted a report. He did not endorse its teachings and has not taught that there is no such thing as Limbo. No Church teaching changed, even though the media, as usual, jumps at any opportunity to make it look as if the Church is changing. It is absolutely reprehensible coverage and proves that one should wait for documents to be taught by bishops, and NOT by secular media, who wouldn't know anything about Limbo or Catholic doctrine if it jumped up and bit them. The media clearly has a secular and "progressive" agenda, which would love to see Church changes in other areas, such as women in the priesthood, etc. Those things won't change either.
Interesting. Since I hold no merit to what the pope says, or the bureaucracy in which he exists, this is somehow interesting, but not that much.
I do take an interest in that LW is catholic (at least raised that way) and the lack of limbo, for her, plays into our recent loss.
So, why you revile the media for ignorance, I wonder the same for the "church."
Personally, the concept of original sin has never made sense...
Perhaps we are prone to sin by our natures, but until we act on that nature and actually commit a sin, how can we be worthy of going to limbo or hell?
I really do think Catholicism does a double-whammy on parents who lose a very young or unborn child -- on one hand, the child is a child from conception -- on the other hand, that child is a person who has 9 months in utero before they can be baptized, and thus is subject to limbo even if their parents intended to get them baptized at the earliest possible time. Sounds kind of unfair -- and, perhaps reflects less than sensitive men making the rules??
I have no doubt that if women were priests dogma would be readically different.
Oh for the pre-historic days of Earth Mother cults. :)
